ITIL v3 Foundation and Foundation Bridge

1. What is the official ITIL V3 Qualification Scheme?

You can find the official ITIL v3 Qualification Scheme here.

2. What are the key differences between V2 and V3?

There is a greater focus on the strategy of IT within an organization and on continual improvement. The emphasis in the new books is that processes alone are not enough to guarantee business success. Processes have to form part of the overall strategy of the business, and have to be directly linked to business outcomes, to be effective. The lifecycle in the new books shows how this can be achieved.

In addition, there are some significant differences in the format. The previous eight books are being replaced with 5 new books covering the IT Service Lifecycle. However any changes to the basic processes are not very radical.  For example:

  • Problem Management has been streamlined
  • Request Fulfillment has been pulled out from Incident Management and given more prominence
  • Event Management is more substantial

Most of the best practices from previous versions of ITIL remain intact and still valid.

3. Do I need to stop any ITIL V2 work to wait for ITIL V3?

There is no need to stop any ITIL-based work to wait for v3. There is nothing in v3 that will fundamentally change the IT Management challenges that customers are facing, and there is nothing in v3 that will change the need for the processes that companies are already implementing.

If you are trying to decide between ITIL v2 Practitioner or Service Manager training now vs. waiting for ITIL v3 Intermediate training later, rest assured that ITIL v2 Practitioner and Service Manager training and certification are still and will continue to be very relevant, since they represent work that needs to be done in a v3-based environment anyway.

4. I have already earned my ITIL Foundations (or Practitioner or Service Managers) certification. Will I need to be recertified?

The OGC (Office of Government Commerce) has already confirmed no recertification is required to maintain certification. However, students pursing ITIL Expert certification (based on v3) will need to take additional training and certification:

  • If you are Service Manager certified, consider HF436S ITIL v3 Managers Bridge - passing this exam will earn you ITIL Expert status!
  • If you are Practitioner certified, you have many  options to achieve ITIL Expert certification - this roadmap is the best source to understand your options.
  • If you are ITIL v2 Foundation certified, consider HE785S ITIL v3 Foundation Bridge, a 1-day course conveniently delivered virtually (no travel required!).

5. Should I wait until ITIL V3 to get ITIL trained so I am on the latest version?

No. The processes covered in V2 are still going to be in V3. The main difference is that they are going to be clearer and the relationships between them will be better defined. A good V2 training course will cover all the aspects that you will need for successful implementation of IT Service Management.  HP strongly recommends not waiting for v3 Intermediate courses if you or your organization currently need skills/knowledge/certification beyond ITIL Foundation.

6. If I achieve ITIL v3 Foundation certification, will that satisfy the Foundation prerequisite for ITIL Practitioner and ITIL Service Manager [v2]?

Yes.

7. When will the new courses and exams be available?

The ITIL v3 Foundation, Foundation Bridge, and Managers Bridge exams are all available now.  ITIL v3 Intermediate exams (Capability, Life Cycle, and Managing Across the Life Cycle) will become available in October 2008 and January 2009 - see details here.

You can register at HP now for ITIL v3 Intermediate courses - go here for a complete course list.

8. What if some of the people in my organization have been certified on ITIL v2? Should everyone get certified on ITIL V3 so we can communicate better together?

This will not really be necessary as the changes in terminology and to the actual processes are not that significant. People should take the training at whatever time is appropriate for them to support their specific needs/initiative. For those who do take ITIL v2 training and later want to learn the specific changes made in ITIL v3, HP's courses HE785S ITIL v3 Foundation Bridge and HF436S ITIL v3 Managers Bridge are available to update one's knowledge and certification to ITIL v3.

9. Is there an "upgrade course" available to help me understand the differences between ITIL V2 and ITIL V3?

HP's courses HE785S ITIL v3 Foundation Bridge and HF436S ITIL v3 Managers Bridge are available to update one's knowledge and certification to ITIL v3.

10. I am scheduled to take my Managers exams soon. In view of the ITIL refresh timetable are they worth doing then? Will I have to re-do once the refresh is completed?

Existing ITIL qualifications will still be validate within the ITIL v3 context, because the core principles will not change.  Note that the quickest path (fewest number of training days required) to achieve ITIL Expert status [v3] is through the v2 Service Manager courses (U8687S Service Support and U8688S Service Delivery) plus HF436S ITIL v3 Managers Bridge

11. With the changes going on with ITIL and OGC, who is responsible for creating the new exams?

The APM Group now has contractual responsibility for ITIL and will lead the team working on the new exams. A senior examination panel has been created which will make recommendations on the format, structure and content of the new exams. This work began around November 2006.  (HP's own David Cannon and David Wheeldon, authors of the ITIL v3 Service Operations book, have served on this panel.)

12. Where can I learn more about ITIL v3 project and what the changes are?

The official ITIL Refresh Web site is updated bi-weekly. Additional relevant resources are listed at the bottom of this document.

13. What is HP's role in ITIL v3?

HP’s David Cannon and David Wheeldon are lead authors for the Service Operations book. HP’s Jeroen Bronkhorst is writing the ITIL integrated process maps and is – together with Ken Wendle – a member of the ITIL advisory board (IAG). David Cannon and David Wheeldon are members of the APM Group senior examiners panel. HP’s Stuart Rance and Ashley Hanna have written the new ITIL Glossary.

ITIL v3 Foundation and Foundation Bridge

14. Who should take ITIL v3 Foundation training?

People who are (a) part of IT organizations undertaking ITIL implementations or (b) interact with an IT organization would benefit greatly from ITIL Foundation training and certification.

Business managers, project managers, business analysts, and other people throughout the enterprise whose core jobs are outside of IT but require regular interaction with IT would benefit from a Foundation level understanding of how IT works, what processes are defined, the roles within those processes, and how IT strives to ensure that its activities are aligned with business objectives.

15. I took ITIL v2 Foundation training but never got around to passing the exam.  Can I still take the ITIL v3 Foundation Bridge course?

Technically speaking, no, because ITIL v2 Foundation certification is a prerequisite for the ITIL v3 Foundation Bridge course.

16. Does HP's ITIL v3 Foundation course include a simulation?

Yes! HP's course HF421S ITIL v3 Foundation includes the HP Race to Results SM Simulation, which has helped 10,000s of ITIL students "get" ITIL in a fun, intense, team-building setting.  The simulation can also be delivered in 1/2-day and 1-day sessions to accommodate audiences for whom ITIL awareness/knowledge is essential but for whom the 3-day Foundation course is not practical or possible (for example, senior management).

ITIL v3 Managers Bridge

17. What can you tell me about the ITIL v3 Managers Bridge course and certification?

HP's course HF436S ITIL v3 Managers Bridge is a 4-day course yielding 5 ITIL Expert credits. It is intended for

  • holders of a v1 or v2 ITIL Manager certification, worth 17 ITIL Expert credits. The combination of v1 or v2 ITIL Manager certification and ITIL v3 Managers Bridge certification yields 22 ITIL Expert credits, which is the minimum number required for ITIL Expert certification
  • holders of 12 or more v2 Practitioner credits (see additional information here). 12 Practitioner credits plus 5 credits from HF436S ITIL v3 Managers Bridge plus 5 credits from HF442S Managing Across the Life Cycle yields the 22 credits to achieve ITIL Expert certification. (Note that candidates pursuing this path must take Managing Across the Life Cycle.)

ITIL v3 Intermediate (Capability, Life Cycle, Managing Across the Life Cycle)

18. What is the difference between the Capability courses and Lifecycle courses?

The Capability courses focus on the design and implementation of ITIL processes.  The Lifecycle courses focus on the contribution of those to the overall IT Service life cycle and are concerned with management and control rather than design and implementation.

19. How is a multiple-choice, scenario-based, gradient-scored question scored?

Each question will have four possible answer options, one of which is worth 5 marks, one of which is worth 3 marks, one of which is worth 1 mark, and one of which is a distracter and achieves no marks.

ITIL v3 Expert Certification

20. What is ITIL Expert certification, and how do I earn it?

ITIL Expert certification is a designation indicating a strong fluency with ITIL v3 best practices.  To achieve ITIL Expert certification, you must accumulate 22 or more ITIL Expert credits by taking accredited ITIL courses and passing the respective exams.  Go here for full details on HP's ITIL courses and exams, the number of ITIL Expert credits for each, and guidance on the most appropriate training/certification options to meet your requirements.

ITIL v3 Master

21. What is an ITIL Master, and how do I earn it?

This designation is named in the official ITIL v3 Qualification Scheme and is intended as a level of certification beyond ITIL Expert.  Further details about this certification will become available as released by APMG.

Note that from time to time you may hear the ITIL Service Manager [v2] certification referred to as "ITIL Master" - such a reference is erroneous in a strict sense, as it has never been referred to by the exam institutes as "ITIL Master".
