Question:
If ITIL v3 has so much more to say about Business Analysis and business/IT alignment, does that make ITILv2 Practitioner and Service Manager training obsolete? |

Answer:
HP Education is frequently asked this question specifically about ITILv2 Practitioner and Service Manager courses and certifications. Those courses and certifications have proven their value in hundreds of IT organizations. Since ITILv3 essentially subsumes ITILv2 and indeed extends ITILv2 to provide a broader business context, ITIL v2 Practitioner and ITIL Manager certifications are still valuable, for both the IT organization as well as for individuals
If you are considering taking ITILv2 Practitioner training now versus waiting for availability of ITIL v3 set of Capability and Life Cycle courses, consider that:
- there is significant overlap of content between v2 Practitioner courses and the corresponding v3 Capability courses
- v2 clustered Practitioner certificates each count for 3.5 ITIL Expert credits
- the ITIL v3 Foundation Bridge, ITILv3 books, and other sources of ITILv3 knowledge can add to one’s v2 Practitioner knowledge to gain a full understanding of ITIL v3
- the combination of ITILv2 Foundation certification (1.5 credits) and three clustered Practitioner certifications (3.5 credits each) makes one eligible for a shorter path to ITIL Expert status that includes the two courses ITIL v3 Managers Bridge and Managing Across the Life Cycle
